Massachusetts' 'Princess Melayah' Loses 4-Month Battle With Rare Condition

A Massachusetts family is grieving after losing their "princess" to a rare condition ahead of the holidays.

Melayah, age 6, was admitted to Boston Children's Hospital with an "unexpected illness" the week before Christmas, according to a GoFundMe campaign.

The Worcester elementary school student was waiting for a new pair of lungs while she fought for her life with her family by her side. All the while, Melayah's family said she maintained her sassy persona and even made her Christmas list for herself and her siblings.

"Melayah was spirited, funny, loving little girl who never left Jen’s side. She was loved by the nursing staff at BCH and by all who knew her," the GoFundMe read. "She was surrounded by her mom, Jennifer Danso, her six brothers and sisters, and her four aunts and uncles, along with other family that loved and cherished her."

Melayah's condition appeared to subside after four months, her family said. Then one fateful night, Melayah developed an infection and her organs failed. She died on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

"We all had faith that she was going to beat this and come out of it," Melayah's aunt Lea said on Facebook. "No one expected this to happen to a little girl like Melayah. Especially since she was healthy little 6-year-old."

"Melayah you are so loved Princess," her other aunt Jessica said on Facebook. "I know your watching over your Mommy and seeing all the love and support. We miss you baby girl."

Melayah's death feels all too familiar to her family, who lost another member earlier this year.

"Less than three months ago our family lost our mother to cancer and losing our princess is just heartbreaking," the GoFundMe reads. "These funds will pay for funeral expenses and a celebration of life for Melayah. Every little bit will help and as a family we appreciate it."

The campaign exceeded its $6,000 goal since it was launched a week ago. Melayah's services were scheduled for Friday, Dec. 30.

"I will keep my promise to you," Jessica added. "I will do my best to keep your mommy strong and protect her on her darkest days. I love you Princess Melayah."
